Launch: Translation of Abstracts into Indigenous Languages

Launch: Translation of Abstracts into Indigenous Languages In-Person / Online

You are cordially invited to an exclusive launch event hosted by the University of Pretoria's Department of Library Services in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.

Join us as we unveil the Translation of Abstracts Project — a pioneering initiative that bridges technology, language, and access by translating academic research into Sepedi, IsiZulu, and Afrikaans.

This impactful project selected 25 thesis abstracts from UPSpace, the University’s institutional repository, and translated them using both professional translators and cutting-edge machine translation tools. By exploring the viability of machine translation for South Africa’s indigenous languages, the initiative not only advances multilingual scholarship but also reaffirms our commitment to inclusive knowledge dissemination and linguistic equity.

Join us in our pursuit of making research truly accessible to African communities.
